Residents of Batamaloo, some 3 kms north of Srinagar, summer capital of Indian Kashmir said a 17-year old youth identified as Muzaffar Ahmad had gone missing during anti-India protests in the area last evening. “On Monday evening youth of the area took to roads and staged anti-India demonstrations. They were protesting against the recent killing of 11 youth in police and paramilitary soldiers firing. The agitating youth were chased by the soldiers, who fired dozens of tear canisters and resorted to heavy baton charge. A youth Muzaffar Ahmad slipped into a drain while the cops were chasing the protestors. His body was fished out from the drain on Tuesday morning,” they said.

Some of the locals alleged that he was pushed into the drain by the chasing police and paramilitary soldiers.

As the news spread that 17-year old youth had died, people of the area irrespective of age and sex took to roads and staged massive anti-India demonstration. Chanting pro-freedom, pro-Islamic and anti-India slogans, they were demanding action against the cops involved in recent killing of youth. The protestors tried to take out a protest march. However, they were intercepted by police and paramilitary soldiers, who lobbed tear smoke shells and fired directly towards the protestors, causing on spot death of a 25-year old protestor Fayaz Ahmad Wani, a government employee. Many protestors including some women were injured in police and paramilitary soldiers’ action.

It further ignited the anger among the locals, who again took to roads and carried the bodies of the two dead. They wanted to bury the bodies in martyrs graveyard Eidgah in old Srinagar. Thousands of youth, who died during in Indian Kashmir during last two decades of turmoil have been buried in the martyrs graveyard. Chanting slogans like “We Want Freedom”, “Go India Go” and “Blood for Blood”, the mourners tried to march towards the martyrs graveyard.

However, they were intercepted by large contingent of police and paramilitary soldiers, who lobbed tear smoke shells and resorted to heavy baton charge to disperse the mourners.

The protestors resisted police action and tried to march ahead. Later, the cops again fired directly on the protestors, causing death of a 25-year old woman. The killing led to more intense clashes between the angry youth and the soldiers.

Admitting killing of woman in police firing, a statement issued by police said, “While dealing with very heavy stone pelting by protesters at Lachmanpora, Batmaloo, police and CRPF men fired in the air. A stray bullet hit a girl who was watching from the window of her house. She was taken to hospital where she was declared brought dead by the doctors.”

Anticipating more trouble, authorities imposed curfew in entire Srinagar area and deployed thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers armed with riot gears and sophisticated weapons. The soldiers have placed barricades and concertina wires on the roads and were not allowing any kind of movement especially towards Batamaloo area, where the fresh deaths took place.

With the death of three more persons, the death toll of persons killed in police and paramilitary soldiers firing in a fortnight has risen to 14.

The fresh killings will further add to the turmoil and there are apprehensions that the authorities may continue to impose curfew across Indian Kashmir for next few days to control the anger and prevent people from taking to roads and staging anti-India demonstrations.
