3rd phase of polling underway in India

The third of nine-phase polling for general elections is underway in India.

New Delhi, April 10/Nationalturk – The third of nine-phase polling for general elections in India is underway and brisk voting was reported from most of the place.

The voters will today decide fate of 91 of the 543 parliamentary seats. In today’s phase, elections are held for seven seats in Delhi, 10 in Uttar Pradesh, six in Bihar, 10 each in Haryana, Odisha and Maharashtra, 20 in Kerala, four in Jharkhand, nine in Madhya Pradesh and one seat each in Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshwadeep and Jammu and Kashmir.

Brisk polling was reported from most of the places, where went to polls today. Young and elderly men and women were waiting in queues to poll their votes.

However, in Indian state of Bihar, two paramilitary soldiers were killed and four others injured in a landmine blast between triggered by Maoists between Jamui and Munger area. Due to the explosion, polling in 13 polling stations in Jamui was deferred.

The main contestants, whose fate would be decided by voters today include seven Indian ministers, former president of rightwing BJP Nitin Gadkari, retired Indian Army chief General VK Singh and speaker of Indian parliament Meira Kumar.

The candidates of anti-graft Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are also in the fray.

The contest to wrest control of parliament and form new government India is between Congress and rightwing party, BJP. According to opinion polls and surveys, rightwing BJP is far ahead then Congress and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who is accused of anti-Muslim riots in his home State of Gujarat of which he is Chief Minister, is expected to be new prime minister of India.

BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi in an affidavit filed before the Election Commission has showed himself as a married man revealing that his wife’s name is Jashodaben.

It is for the first that Modi has stated that he is married.

So far, Modi used to leave the column of spouse which is to be filled in an affidavit as blank. He had kept the column as blank in 2012 Assembly elections as well.

Modi is also contesting election from two seats.
