India has said 40 Indian workers working in construction company have been abducted in Iraq.

New Delhi, June 18/Nationalturk-  Indian government on Wednesday claimed that 40 Indian workers working in construction company have been abducted in Iraq, where Sunni militants ISIS attacked country’s main oil refinery in latest attack.

“40 Indian workers working with Tariq Ur Alhood construction company have been abducted in Iraq. Most of the abducted Indians are from the northern part of India,” India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbarruddin told media persons in Indian capital New Delhi today.

He said no ransom calls have been received as yet.  “We have not received any call of any nature from anyone indicating about ransom or about taking Indians in custody in Iraq”.

He did not say who had seized the workers, who largely hailed from Punjab and other parts of Northern India.

‘India in touch with humanitarian agencies’

The spokesperson said Indian government was in touch with humanitarian agencies and the Iraqi government over the kidnapping of its nationals.

“Hundred Indians are stuck in Iraq,” he said adding a contingency unit is working in Indian capital to tackle the situation.

He vowed that his country won’t leave any stone unturned in its quest to help every single Indian in Iraq and work with all possible agencies to find the abducted Indians.

“Former Indian ambassador to Iraq Suresh Reddy is going to help reinforce Indian mission,” he added.

The Sunni ISIS militants and Saddam supporters have made quick gains in Iraq in last one week and are about 70 kms from Iraqi capital Baghdad. The militants have taken over several towns including Mosul and Kirkik and are holding Fallujah and some other towns.

The militants today attacked Iraq’s biggest oil refinery in the town of Baiji, 225 kms north of Baghdad.
