Srinagar, June 24/Nationalturk- At least five Indian soldiers were killed and six others injured when militants attacked an Indian army convoy in Indian administered Kashmir on Monday evening.

Sources said a well armed group of militants attacked a convoy of Indian army at Hyderpora bypass on Airport-Lal Chowk road, some 12 kms from summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir this evening.

“The militants fired from automatic weapons towards the army vehicles in the convoy. In the militant attack, which continued for some time, five soldiers were killed and six others injured,” an Indian army spokesman said.

Immediately after the militant attack, army, police and paramilitary soldiers laid siege around the area to flush out the militants responsible for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.

Half-an-hour later militants fired on paramilitary soldiers at Barzulla area, some two kms away from Hyderpora area.

A paramilitary officer was injured in the militant attack. He has been hosptialised.

The attack came a day ahead of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Indian Kashmir. Indian PM is scheduled to arrive on a two-day visit to region tomorrow (June 25).

After today’s attack, the security apparatus across Indian Kashmir has been increased to prevent militants from striking during Indian PM’s stay in the region.

Earlier, on Saturday two policemen were killed in a militant attack in city centre.

Hizbul Mujahideen owns attack

A spokesman of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen identifying himself as Baliguddin spokesperson of the outfit called up a local news gathering agency and owned the responsibility of the attack.

“Hizbul Mujahideen has formed several squads and similar attacks will be carried out in the city in the future as well,” he said.
