Seven NGO workers including six women were killed by attackers in Pakistan’s restive northwest Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province Tuesday.

Islamabad, Jan 1/Nationalturk: At least seven NGO workers including six women were shot dead by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s restive northwest Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province Tuesday.

Pakistan newspaper The Dawn, quoted Station House Officer of Lahor Police Station Zulfiqar Khan as saying that the vehicle carrying employees of an NGO – Support With Working Solutions (SWWS), working on health and education was ambushed by unidentified assailants at Sher Afzal Kalley near Anbar Interchange in Swabi district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

“Six women workers and a man have been killed while driver of the vehicle sustained injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is out of danger,” he said.

Gunmen were probably riding on motorbike

Another police official said unidentified gunmen targeted the workers when they were leaving from community centre in a vehicle.

“The gunmen, probably riding a motorbike indiscriminately fired on the NGO workers”.

Immediately after the attack, top police officials visited the spot to take stock of the situation. The police men launched a massive combing operation in the area to flush out the gunmen responsible for the attack. “The motives of the attack have not been known yet. We have launched investigations,” a police officer said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack on NGO workers takes place a day before anti-polio campaign was to be kicked in the restive province tomorrow.

The SWWS (NG) works in health, education and vocational training of women besides working on maternal and child mortality and reproductive health issues.

Earlier in December 2012, office of the NGO was destroyed when a bomb exploded near its building in Muhallah Gulbahar in Swabi.
