The first incident which occurred on 19th May saw a 2-year-old child who was playing around an escalator fall of the end from a four meter height.

The toddler who was seen shouting for help as he went up from the outside of the escalator dropped off when he came to the end.

The boy who could have suffered serious injuries from the fall, was caught in the air by Ali Arapi, who was reported to have had a brain operation just a month earlier.

Mr Arapi was hailed a hero by the Turkish press and the shop owners who witnessed the heroics of the young man.

It was later reported that the child who had come to the shopping mall with his father had wondered off while his parent was looking around the shops.

Arapi who spoke to media said “Children believe the escalators are playgrounds, the families are irresponsible. The family’s should take better care of their children.”

A shop owner, Ibrahim Çabuk, who spoke to the media said “Mr Ali had an operation just a month ago from his brain, if the child had fallen on his head he could have been in a bad position himself. The children play around the escalators all the time. This was not the first time such a thing happened, but luckily those incidents ended with small injuries and nothing major happened.”

The second incident which occurred on Sunday, resulted on another 2-year-old child to be taken to hospital after she fell from approximately 2.5 metres.

The toddler, who had seen slightly older children playing on the escalator, grabbed on to the outside and had gone to at least half the distance before she could no longer hold on and fell.

It was reported that she had a few bumps and bruises on her head and torso and that none of her injuries were serious.

The shopping mall has since, put large flower pots on the side of the escalators to deter children from climbing the rails.

In 2006 Burak Hacıkasımoğlu, 16, died after he lost his balance while trying to sit on an escalators arm rest at a shopping mall and dropped to the concrete ground from 15 metres. A 3.5-year-old child had also fallen in the same shopping mall who also died. In April 2008, a nine-year-old child had fallen off the side of an escalator at the Istanbul International airport but was caught by an employee in mid air. In 2009, Sinan Noah, 7, who lost his balance on an escalator at a shopping mall in Antalya, dropped from several meters, and went into a coma.
