Islamabad, April 10/Nationalturk – In a good news for electricity starved country, a Chinese company will set up two power plants in Pakistan with each plant having 1,320MW capacity.

The Chinese group will set up two coal power plants, each of 1,320MW capacity at Gadani in restive Balochistan province of Pakistan. The company is likely to invest around 2 billion US dollars in the project.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in this regard between China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and Pakistan’s Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).

CMEC General Manager Li Kan and N A Zuberi of PPIB signed the agreement on behalf of the two groups.

Pakistan’s Water and Power Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif was present on the occasion.

Asif said several MoUs had been signed with foreign investors for setting up 10 power projects, with a cumulative capacity of 6,600MW  at Gadani town in Balochistan.

Pakistan facing many hours of power cuts

Pakistan is facing acute power crisis and people have to face 10-12 hours power cuts.

Asif said completion of the coal power projects would help in addressing the problem of load shedding in the country.

He lauded Chinese contribution to Pakistan’s efforts for strengthening economy and power sector.

China is close ally of Pakistan and providing economic and military assistance to the country.

Chinese are already working on 120 projects in Pakistan with around a quarter related to energy.

Conceding that many hours of load shedding was being carried out in different cities and rural areas of the country, Asif stressed the need for energy conservation.

He said 2,250MW of electricity would be added to the system within two months, which will help in reducing load shedding.
