China’s missiles hit sea off Taiwan

China is extremely upset by US Democrat Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and has carried out his threat.

The military is now practicing around Taiwan, including using live ammunition.

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry speaks of several ballistic missiles fired by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at the start of its multi-day military exercise. They are said to have flown into the sea northeast and southwest of Taiwan, local media reports. According to eyewitnesses, at least some projectiles were fired from Pingtan Island, around 120 kilometers from Taiwan.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou said confidently and in a firm voice: “Our government is even more determined to protect our nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Given the current scenario, our government will not only actively strengthen its self-defense capabilities, but also strengthen close ties with like-minded people countries like the United States Together, we will defend the rules-based international order and avoid further regional escalation, while vigorously protecting the security of the Taiwan Straits and freedom, openness, peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. ”

China extends maneuvers

The People’s Liberation Army of China, meanwhile, announced that the maneuvers would be extended by one day and expanded to include a new zone.

For Song Guo-cheng, a researcher at the Institute for International Relations at National Chengchi University, the maneuvers are part of the People’s Republic’s larger plan: “The dimensions (of the military maneuvers) are much larger than those of 1996. The most important goal of the exercise is to Sealing off the sea in case Taiwan is officially attacked.”

Expert: Taiwan needs US troops in the country

Even if Taiwan has increased its defense budget enormously and is buying new weapons almost tirelessly from the USA and there have been statements of support such as the one recently made by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives – the latest escalation shows from his point of view that much more is needed.

“Not only does military cooperation between Taiwan and the US need to be deepened. It needs to become standard, and that could include (American) troop stationing on the island and long-term positioning of American naval convoys,” Song Guo-cheng told TVBS.

In view of the escalation, he warns of haste: “We must expand our war preparations ourselves. We need an asymmetric defense strategy immediately. Whether as a hedgehog or a porcupine, we must let the attackers know what their war would cost them.”

Behind this is the hope that China would turn away from Taiwan – like an eagle that drops a mouse and then loses its appetite. However, it doesn’t look like that at the moment.
