Corona virus in Shanghai: New mass tests over the weekend

The lockdown in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai has only been over for a few days, and according to the media, mass tests are already pending again in the first parts of the city. It is still unclear how many districts are affected.

The strict corona lockdown in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai has been lifted for just under a week, and millions of residents are already facing new mass tests.

The AFP news agency initially reported that the southwestern district of Minhang was to be cordoned off on Saturday to test the people living there. The district has more than two million inhabitants. The news agency referred to authorities saying that Minhang would be placed under “closed management.”

According to AFP, this partial lockdown should only apply for a short time until all samples have been taken by the local population. However, the authorities did not give a specific time frame. No information was given on possible measures in the event of positive corona findings.

Also in other parts of the city mass tests?

Other media later said that new mass tests were also planned in other parts of the city. The newspaper “Shanghai Daily” reported that a mass test had also been announced in the Songjiang district. This should be done on Saturday and Sunday.

NBC News also confirmed the planned mass test in Minhang on Saturday. The residents were instructed to stay at home during the period set for the test. However, NBC News also said that other district authorities in Shanghai also want to temporarily seal off districts again. The broadcaster reported that in at least three districts the authorities had already announced a two-day lockdown and stricter tests in the next week and a half from Thursday. However, it was not clear which districts should be affected.

The Reuters news agency, on the other hand, reported that mass tests are to take place in seven of Shanghai’s 16 districts over the weekend. In addition to Minhang, this also applies to Pudong, Huangpu, Jingan, Xuhui, Hongkou and Baoshan. Reuters directly referred to Shanghai Health Authority deputy director Zhao Dandan.

Only been out of the lockdown for about a week

It was only last Wednesday that a lockdown lasting around two months expired in the metropolis with around 25 million inhabitants. However, numerous conditions still apply to the population: for example, a negative PCR test is a prerequisite for visiting a shopping center or working in an open-plan office.

China is pursuing a strict zero-Covid strategy. According to AFP, nine new infections with the corona virus have been recorded in Shanghai in the past 24 hours. In mid-April, the city’s health authorities had recorded up to 30,000 new infections per day with the spread of the omicron variant.
