Death Toll from Tropical Storm Trami in the Philippines Rises to 97

The death toll from Tropical Storm Trami in the Philippines has climbed to 97 as heavy rains and landslides continue to cause devastation. Thousands of residents have been displaced, with severe damage reported to infrastructure and agricultural areas.

The northern regions of the Philippines are reeling from the effects of Tropical Storm Trami, locally known as “Kristine.” The storm has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and destruction across the affected areas. According to the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the death toll from the storm has reached 97, while 69 people have been injured, and 30 are still missing. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities race against time to find survivors.

Widespread Damage and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Trami’s intense rainfall and strong winds resulted in severe flooding in several regions, particularly in Bicol and Luzon. In the hard-hit areas, floodwaters submerged homes and roads, with some reports indicating water levels reached rooftops. Rescue teams are struggling to reach all affected communities due to high water levels and strong currents. The floods also caused massive landslides, which buried vehicles and isolated entire villages.

According to local reports, nearly 44,537 buildings were damaged, and more than 6.7 million people were affected by the storm. Authorities have reported that extensive agricultural lands and critical infrastructure suffered significant damage, with losses still being assessed.

Massive Displacement of Residents

The heavy rains prompted authorities to evacuate approximately 75,400 residents from high-risk areas to safer grounds. Many evacuees remain in temporary shelters as relief efforts continue. The country’s experience with frequent typhoons highlights the urgency of response and preparedness efforts to mitigate such large-scale disasters.

This disaster comes as a reminder of the vulnerability of the Philippines, which experiences an average of 20 typhoons annually. Trami’s impact draws comparisons to the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which claimed over 7,300 lives and caused widespread destruction.

Authorities remain on high alert as further assessments continue, and efforts to rescue those trapped or missing intensify amidst the challenging weather conditions.
