Born to a respected Argentine family on August 24, 1899 in Buenos Aires, the poet, essayist and short-story writer had command over a number of languages, though Spanish was the language of his famed literature.

In 1914 Borges moved to Switzerland with his family, where he learned French and German and also received his bachelor’s degree. While in Europe, Borges also spent a year in Spain, where he joined the Ultraist movement of international avant-garde poets. He returned to Argentina in 1921 and established the Ultraist movement in Latin America. Luis Borges’ first published work was a volume of poems titled Fervor de Buenos Aires, poemas (Fervour of Buenos Aires, Poems). Publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals Jorge Luis Borges is known for his innovative style of interconnected short stories with where death and nightmare were recurring themes. His most famous books are Ficciones (1944) and The Aleph (1949).

Borges’ international fame was consolidated in the 1960s, due in part to the “Latin American Boom” and the success of Gabriel García Márquez’s Cien Años de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude). Aside from being a writer, he was also an essayist, poet and translator. Jorge Luis Borges died on June 14, 1986 in Geneva, Switzerland.
