Google Launches In Cuba As First Foreign Internet Company

Google becomes first foreign tech firm to set up shop in Cuba

US technology monolith Google has started running servers in Cuba, becoming the first international content provider in one of the world’s least connected countries.

The internet giant opened a new data centre in Cuba yesterday where it will store information such as popular YouTube videos.

In a move that indicates Cuba is opening its doors to modernisation and greater access to information, the on-island servers will make it easier for Cuban people to access Google’s services.

Google announced plans to launch in Cuba back December, after signing a deal with ETECSA, the state-run internet provider. At the time, Google said the deal would let ETECSA deliver some of its bandwidth intensive content, like YouTube videos, from local storage, rather than having to reach out to Google servers in another country.
