New Delhi, July 8/Nationalturk – A two-storey hotel collapsed in southern Indian State of Andhra Pradesh on Monday morning, leaving 11 people dead 15 others injured. Many people were still trapped under debris of the building.

The 2-storey building of Iranian City Light Hotel in Secunderabad city of Andhra Pradesh State collapsed at around 0630 hours.

“Many people were present in the hotel early morning to have Iranian tea and snacks when the building collapsed. Immediately after the collapse, police, firefighters and rescue workers reached the spot to launch the rescue operation,” an official said.

He said the rescue teams, who were joined by experts, were clearing the debris carefully to pull out the trapped people.

“The rescue teams have so far managed to evacuate 22 people from the rubble. Most of the rescued people had suffered critical injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals,” officials said.

Over 20 people still trapped under debris

A top civil official of the city said 11 people have died in the hotel collapse and 15 others injured. “We fear more than 20 people are still trapped under the debris and efforts are on to pull them out”.

He said among the dead include four hotel employee and some customers, who were in the hotel having tea.

“It was still not clear how many persons were present in the hotel when it collapsed in the morning,” the official said.

Reports said son of the hotel owner was also trapped in debris.

The officials said death toll may go up as many people are still trapped in the building. “The longer it takes to rescue trapped people, the chances of their survival reduces”.

The over six-decade-old City Light hotel, which was a popular landmark in the city, was famous for the Iranian tea, snacks, biryani and other dishes. People in large numbers used to visit the hotel to taste the dishes and have Iranian tea.
