Indian police have taken a French consular official on Tuesday into custody after his Indian wife accused the diplomat of raping their only 3-year-old daughter.

The French diplomat was on Tuesday arrested and taken for medical check-up in Bangalore, according to media reports. He will be produced in Magistrate’s court later in the day. The arrest came after France refused to interfere in the incident.

Bangalore Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji said the Frenchman was taken into custody and escorted to a hospital for undisclosed medical tests. “The investigation continues. ‘ We have seized this pervert’s passport,’ he added.

No immunity for French official daughter rapist in India

French government okays the arrest case as the own daughter rape accused Pascal Mazurier did not enjoy diplomatic immunity.

Pascal Mazurier’s Indian wife Suja Jones Mazurier had accused him last week of raping their only 3 year-old daughter, after which the Bangalore Police detained him for questioning. The police, however, refused to arrest him saying their hands were tied as the envoy enjoyed diplomatic immunity.

She also wanted the French Embassy to be directed to help her with legal and financial assistance, as she was currently unemployed and has to take care of their children. Suja had written a letter to home minister P Chidambaram and external affairs minister SM Krishna and requested that her husband, Pascal Mazurier, be restrained from leaving the country till legal proceedings were completed and that under no circumstance should he be allowed custody of their children, who are French nationals.

Suja Jones, an Indian citizen, said she is married to Pascal Mazurier, deputy head of Chancery in the Consulate of France, Bangalore and have three children- a seven year-old son, the victim and a 20-month-old son.

She said apart from High Grounds police station here registering a case of rape against the diplomat, in view of the “medical evidence”, the Baptist hospital, Bangalore has also registered a medico-legal case against him.

Mirji said the detention was based on a police complaint filed by his Indian wife last week accusing the man of raping their daughter. The wife declined to comment while the case was pending.

The man was to appear later Tuesday in court, where a judge was expected to order that he remain in custody while authorities investigate.

French Embassy in India : The accused indeed an employee

The French Embassy in Delhi confirmed that the man was an employee at the Bangalore consulate and said it could not comment on the case while an investigation is under way. It said international law does not provide for immunity for acts committed outside the exercise of consular duties.

In Paris, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero declined to identify the accused man but added he was primarily involved in administrative work at the French consulate in Bangalore.

“We have to let police and the justice system do their job,” Valero said. “We have to wait for the results of the investigation.”

France states Indian law would take its course, as the accused French husband who claimed to have raped his daufgter did not hold a diplomatic passport and enjoyed no immunity in India.
