New Delhi, Aug 27/Nationalturk- In a giant step to boost unmanned fighting capabilities, India is developing robotic soldiers, which can be used in handling Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

India’s Defence Minister A K Antony told Lok Sabha, lower house of Indian parliament that India’s  Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) known as ‘Daksha’.

“It is an automated mobile platform for multi-purpose payloads. It is an electrically powered state-of-the-art Robot capable of being remotely controlled over a distance of 500 metres line-of-sight and can be utilised continuously for 3 hours before recharge,” he said.

Robot can be used to handle IEDs

Antony said the robot has stair climbing capability and can be used for handling deadly Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

“Technology for production of ROV has been transferred to Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).  Indian army have placed orders for 20 Daksha (robotic soldiers) to further check their capability and use them for handling IEDs,” he said.

Sources said if the robotic soldiers efficiency matches with army’s standard, then these can then be deployed in difficult warfare zones like the Line of Control (LoC), defecto border between nuclear arch rivals India and Pakistan in Indian administered Kashmir.

There is tension between India and Pakistan over the recent firing incidents along LoC. The incident increased after August 6 killing of five Indian soldiers allegedly by Pakistan army at LoC in Poonch sector in Indian administered Kashmir. Since then both countries have been regularly accusing each other of “unprovoked” firing on the LoC in which many soldiers and civilians have died on both sides.
