Authorities have confirmed that at least 26 police officers have been killed by Maoist militants in an ambush in Eastern India on Tuesday.

The ambush by Maoist militants occurred in the Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh state, officials said.

A further eight security officials were injured in the attack which took place during routine patrols by the militants.

Several Indian paramilitary and police officers and Maoist insurgents were killed in recent months as attacks have increased.

The Indian Maoists are one of the most fierce organizations which the Indian government face with tens of thousands of members who live in dense forestry areas where it is difficult to track them down.

The Maoist organisation formed in late 2004 as the merger of Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre of India (MCC). The aim of the group is to bring the government down.

The militant organization receives the support of people in the poorest of areas in India and has also received support from younger Indians.

Officials in India have said that in 2009, there were a over 900 people killed, related to Maoist attacks with over 600 being civilians.

However, many residents in poorer areas of the Asian country see the Maoist rebels as fighting for their own cause.

The Maoist militant organization, usually attack Indian security forces but countless number of civilians have also been killed or injured by insurgents and security officials.
