India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have summit level talks with United States president Barrack Hussain Obama in September in Washington.

New Delhi, June 5/Nationalturk – India’s newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet United States president Barrack Hussain Obama in September in Washington on sidelines of UN General Assembly summit.

“Obama had invited Indian PM Modi, who is leader of India’s rightwing Hindu party BJP, to US when he called up the newly elected PM to congratulate him on taking over reigns of world’s largest democracy,” sources said.

The said Indian PM has accepted the invitation and is expected to meet US president on sidelines of UN General Assembly summit in September this year.

Sources said the meeting won’t take place in New York, where UN General Assembly summit will be held, but in the form of a full-fledged bilateral summit in Washington.

“The two sides are finalizing the date for the meeting which will be in the last week of September,” India’s leading newspaper, Times of India, reported.

Modi-Obama could meet between Sept 26-30

Media reports said the bilateral meeting between US president and Indian PM could be held in Washington anytime between September 26 and 30.

Sources said Indian ambassador to US is scheduled to visit India on June 8 for briefings with the Prime Minister’s Office.

It will be after about 12 years that Modi will travel to US. Anti-Muslim riots broke out in Indian State of Gujarat in 2002 when he was chief minister of the State. Over 1000 Muslims were killed and thousands others injured by the Hindu rioters, who were alleged to have backing of the State government.

He remained the only person to be barred from travelling to the US for many years under the country’s International Religious Freedom Act.
