Jair Bolsonaro applies for US tourist visa

After Bolsonaro's supporters stormed the Brazilian parliament, investigators are investigating the ex-president's role.

According to his lawyer, however, he wants to “take a break” in the USA and applied for a tourist visa.

According to his lawyer, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has applied for a six-month tourist visa for the United States. In an email to the Reuters news agency, lawyer Felipe Alexandre wrote that Bolsonaro submitted the application last Friday. He will remain in the US while it is decided.

Lawyer says Bolsonaro wants to ‘take time off’

“He wants to take some time off, clear his head and enjoy being a tourist in the US for a few months,” Alexandre wrote. Bolsonaro will then decide how to proceed. The US State Department declined to provide information, citing data protection concerns.

Bolsonaro flew to Florida two days before his term ended on January 1. The right-wing politician lost the presidential election against the leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and contrary to tradition, he did not take part in the inauguration of his successor.

Among other things, supporters stormed Congress

Hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace a few days later, demanding a military coup. The Supreme Court has approved an investigation into how Bolsonaro incited the anti-democracy protests.

Bolsonaro later distanced himself from the attack on the presidential palace. At the same time, he denied any responsibility for it. US lawmakers called on President Joe Biden to revoke Bolsonaro’s visa in response to the violence in Brasília. Bolsonaro is said to be in Florida on a diplomatic visa, which expires today.
