Large aquarium in Berlin-Mitte burst – dead fish everywhere

The fire brigade and police have been in large-scale operations in Berlin-Mitte since early Friday morning.

A large aquarium with 1,000 cubic meters of water has burst. Most of the 1,500 fish are probably dead. Two people were injured.

The large aquarium “Aqua-Dom” in Berlin-Mitte with 1,000 cubic meters of water and 1,500 fish burst on Friday morning for previously unknown reasons, according to the fire brigade and police.
Two people were slightly injured by broken glass. They were taken to a hospital. It was initially not known whether they were employees of the hotel in which the aquarium was located or whether they were hotel guests. A total of 35 people were sighted “by the rescue service”.

The aquarium burst “suddenly”, said a spokesman for the fire brigade: “The water in this aquarium has almost completely leaked out, both in the building and on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße,” the spokesman explained to rbb on site. “Due to the high water pressure in the aquarium, when it burst it took away a whole lot of objects that are now scattered on the street.”

The 1,500 fish are probably dead for the most part. The fish are no longer in the water, according to the spokesman for the fire brigade. They have therefore spread out in the building and on the street. A politician who stayed at the hotel reported that everything inside the hotel had been destroyed, with dead fish lying around everywhere. “This is a big disaster for the fish and the hotel.”

At around 5:45 a.m., there was a very loud noise, according to police. At the same time, the fire brigade received an alarm from an automatic fire alarm in the hotel. A police spokesman added that parts of the facade of the hotel where the aquarium was located had been thrown onto the street.

The cause of the bursting of the aquarium is still unclear at this time. According to the police, there is no evidence of a targeted, violent attack.

Fire brigade on duty since 6:10 a.m

The fire brigade has been on a large scale operation with around 100 firefighters in the immediate vicinity of the Berlin Cathedral since 6:10 a.m., it was said. There are also about 100 police forces. The area is under water and is cordoned off over a wide area. A lot of water had run into the nearby gullies. The police are asking to bypass the area.

According to the traffic information center, Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse between Spandauer Strasse and Schloßbrücke is closed due to an underwash. There is “extremely much water” on the road. Traffic jams occur. Helicopters circled overhead. The situation was unclear for a long time.
The completely destroyed aquarium with a capacity of one million liters is located in the “Dom-Aquarée” city quarter. There is also a hotel in the building. The 350 to 400 people housed there were evacuated and housed in other hotels.

Parts of the surrounding hotel were also damaged. The rubble-strewn ground floor was searched for people with rescue dogs. “But no more people are missing in this building, it’s purely a security measure that we’re taking there,” said the fire department spokesman.

It was initially unclear how badly the building was damaged. They are now talking to the operator as to whether the bursting of the aquarium will affect the statics of the building, it said.
