Manchester United welcomes back Rio Ferdinand as defender declared fit

Sir Alex Ferguson seems to be a happy man after influential centre back Rio Ferdinand was declared fit after playing 45 minutes with Manchester United’s reserve side which won Oldham 2-1.

The Manchester United and England fullback had injured his knee ligaments at a training session during England’s World Cup preparations in June.

The injury caused by a clash between Emile Heskey and Ferdinand closed the centre backs World Cup and was initially thought that he would not return to action until mid October.

Manchester United’s reserve side manager and former team mate, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said “Rio is always the same player. It is a while since he has played but he was still calm”

“He has got through an important 45 minutes, straight after two very hard training sessions Tuesday and the day before so we are delighted with him.”

“There was no problem whatsoever, It was always planned that he would play 45 minutes. I am not sure he needs any more games. Rio is a naturally fit lad

“It was about distances and getting tighter to the ball. Now he is available for selection again”

Rio Ferdinand had an injury plagued year last season due to a re-occurring back problem and is hoping that such a problem will not occur again.
