Directions and address of the Oktoberfest 2022

The Oktoberfest takes place every year on the Theresienwiese. The venue is in the middle of Munich’s Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district. If you want to travel to the Oktoberfest by car, enter the address “Bavariaring Munich” into your navigation system.

During the event, the public parking lots and multi-storey car parks will be overcrowded. If you still get a parking space, you have to reckon with the fact that the fees for this can be very high – moreover, the car is often not allowed to be parked here for longer than 24 hours. The organizer advises to switch to Park+Ride stations in the surrounding area. These include the Park+Ride stations Olympiazentrum, Messestadt Ost as well as Fröttmaning and Kieferngarten. From most stations you only need 30 minutes to the Theresienwiese.

Do not take advantage of private parking offers. Also, do not park your vehicle in an advertised space. Here your car can be towed if necessary, which leads to additional, high costs and annoyance.

Prefer to use public transport

You can also use public transport. Please note, however, that the trains and buses are very crowded. Our tip: Don’t get off at the overcrowded Theresienwiese station, instead get off one or two stops earlier or later.

S1 or S8 to Hackerbrücke
S7 or S20 to Heimeranplatz and from here continue with U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese or Schwanthalerhöhe

Highlights at Oktoberfest 2022

In addition to traditions such as the entry of the Wiesn landlords and the subsequent tapping, a wide variety of festival tents and attractions such as the original Pitt’s Totenwand, the Munich Zugspitzbahn or Fedl’s Teufelsrad await you every year. In the Ferris wheel you have a fantastic view over Munich.

Other highlights include the two-hour Oktoberfest parade of traditional costumes and riflemen on September 18 at 10 a.m. Other dates include the traditional memorial service on September 22 at 9:30 a.m. and the concert by the Wiesn band at the foot of the Bavaria statue on September 25 at 11 a.m. The Oktoberfest is rounded off with a firecracker shooting on the steps of the Bavaria on October 3rd at 12 noon.

Why is it called Oktoberfest even though it takes place in September?

Oktoberfest dates back to celebrations between October 12th and 17th, 1810. At the time, the wedding of the Bavarian Crown Prince was being honored and celebrated accordingly. The festival was repeated in the years that followed, until it became a tradition that was brought forward but also lengthened considerably.

Meadows, Wies’n or Wiesn – terminology of the folk festival?

The Oktoberfest takes place on the Theresienwiese. For this reason, people in Bavaria also say they go to the Wiesn. The terms “Wiesen” or “Wies’n” are incorrect.

A beer is drunk at the Wiesn. The spellings Mass or Maaß are also incorrect and should be avoided by visitors to the Oktoberfest. But if you’re toasting with other guests, you should definitely think about the “Cheers”. Even if the song is “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit”, you should better leave out the “i”.
