Pakistan government has started talks with cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and cleric Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT), who are demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign.

Islamabad, Aug 21/Nationalturk – Pakistan government has started talks with cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and cleric Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT), who alongwith tens of thousands of their supporters are sitting outside parliament and demanding resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz sharif.

Imran Khan and Qadri alongwith tens of thousands of their supporters have entered Red Zone housing parliament house, Prime Minister’s House, President’s House, Supreme Court and embassies of various countries.

Khan and Qadri are leading “freedom” and “revolution” marches respectively and are demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was elected last year, to resign.

Both Khan and Qadri had refused to hold talks with government saying talks can be held only after Nawaz Sharif steps down. However, after powerful army asked both government and opposition parties to resolve the issue amicably, the government and opposition parties budged from their stand and agreed to hold talks.

PTI leaders held  first round of dialogue process with government late Wednesday night. During the talks, PTI leaders presented six demands, made by Imran Khan, before the government negotiation committee.

2nd round of talks today

The government team would present PTI demands before Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and second round of talks will be held today

In its six demands, PTI has demanded resignation of Prime Minister, alleging that large scale rigging took place in 2013 election.

“We presented demands to the government negotiation team. Our  first demand is resignation of PM Nawaz Sharif,” PTI’s senior leader

Shah Mehmood Qureshi said.

Imran said acceptance of their demands and realisation would lead to fresh elections to make a new Pakistan, claiming entire Pakistan had risen for the dawn of a new morning of real democracy and a revolution and a change. “There was a Tehrir Square in Egypt and this was Freedom Square”.

Govt team met PAT leaders

Before holding talks with Imran Khan, the government’s negotiating team held talks with leaders of Qadri’s PAT.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek,  (PAT) leaders told government team  that nothing less than resignations of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif would be acceptable. The PAT also demanded registration of murder case against Sharif brothers and 19 others allegedly involved in Model Town tragedy.

“The talks cannot move further till Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif resign and murder case against 21 accused in Model Town tragedy is registered,” the negotiating team of PAT told the government team.

During first round of talks, the PAT leaders handed over demands to the government team. “We have told the government that PAT does not expect justice in case of Model Town tragedy till Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif are sitting in their offices,” Raheeq Abbasi, PAT Secretary General told reporters.

He said the government team was welcomed but made it clear that there would be no flexibility in demands of PAT.

The next round of talks will be held today.

Qadri while addressing his supporters said  he never refused talks claiming that the government had not sent any negotiating team to him.

He said they would not show any flexibility in their stand.
