Pakistan to hold elections on May 11

Islamabad, March 20/Nationalturk-  The parliamentary elections in Pakistan will be held on May 11, a presidential spokesman said.

“The president received a summary from the government asking him to announce a suitable date for the election. The president announced today that general elections to the National Assembly (Pakistan’s parliament) will be held on May 11,” Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

He said President announced the election date after receiving summary from the Prime Minister. “The Prime Minister had advised President to announce a suitable date for holding general elections of the National Assembly in terms of Article 48 (1) of the Constitution read with the relevant statutory provisions,” he said.

Pakistan’s National Assembly was dissolved on March 16 after completing five years of its constitutional term. A caretaker administration will now manage the run-up to elections.

Babar said section 11 (1) of Representation of the People Act 1976 reads, “As soon as may be necessary and practicable, the President makes an announcement of the date or dates on which the polls shall be taken, the Election Commission, not later than thirty days of such announcement shall, by notification in the official gazette, call upon a constituency to elect a representative or representatives”.

Pakistan’s current setup was the country’s first civilian government since independence in 1947 to complete its full term.

Outgoing Parliament held 60 sessions, 521 sittings

According to Pakistani official, the outgoing National Assembly held 50 sessions and 521 sittings during which it passed 134 bills, including 18 private members’ bills.

The provincial assemblies in Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were dissolved on March 19, while the Punjab Assembly is expected to follow suit today.

The electoral race will be dominated by the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, opposition Pakistan Muslim League (N) led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) led by cricketer turned politician Imran Khan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Election Commission said the final election schedule will be announced after March 23.

“The process of collecting nomination papers will start from March 25 and will continue till March 30. All the potential candidates, who wish to contest the elections, must submit their nomination papers by March 30,” it said.

It said it has allocated seven days to analyse the nomination papers and will submit the final list of candidates, approved for upcoming elections, on April 19.

“Any candidate who decides to withdraw from the elections can do so by April 18,” it added.
