Pfizer and BioNTech are suing Moderna

Moderna as well as BioNTech and Pfizer use the novel mRNA technology for the corona vaccines.

After Moderna sued the two companies for patent infringement, they are now filing a counterclaim.

The US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech have filed a lawsuit in a Boston federal court against the US biotech group Moderna in a dispute over competing corona vaccines. It sought the dismissal of Moderna’s lawsuit and a declaration that Moderna’s patents are invalid and not infringed. This is according to court documents.

Moderna is suing BioNTech and Pfizer

Moderna first sued the Mainz-based vaccine manufacturer and the US pharmaceutical giant in August, accusing the companies of infringing on its technology patents. According to its own statements, Moderna developed these before the pandemic. The companies have not yet responded to Reuters requests for comment.

Moderna has also filed a similar lawsuit against Pfizer and BioNTech in Germany. All three pharmaceutical companies are also involved in patent disputes with other vaccine manufacturers in the United States. Moderna and BioNTech are considered pioneers in the novel mRNA technology on which the corona vaccines of both sides are based and which brought them billions in sales. mRNA stands for messenger ribonucleic acid, also known as messenger RNA.
