Of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, the greatest has undoubtedly been the people I have met, my friends, my competitors, and most importantly, the fans who have brought life to the sport. Today I want to share a message with all of you.

As many of you know, the last three years have presented me with challenges from injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to get back to my competitive form. But I also know what my body can do and its limitations, and its signals to me have recently been clear. I am 41 years old. I’ve played more than 1500 matches in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever dreamed possible and now I have to tell myself when it’s time to retire.
