Just two days after the attack in a dance club in California, seven farm workers were shot dead in the US state – apparently by a colleague. According to the police, the alleged perpetrator shot himself on two farms. Seven people were killed and another person was critically injured.

The 67-year-old man has since been arrested, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference. The motive for the crime is not known. The man acted alone. A semi-automatic handgun was found in the man’s car, police said. The attacks occurred near the town of Half Moon Bay, about 50 kilometers south of San Francisco.

The alleged perpetrator turned himself in

The police received an emergency call on Monday afternoon (local time) and moved out, police chief Corpus reported. Officials discovered four bodies with gunshot wounds on a farm. A fifth victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. “Shortly thereafter, three more fatalities with gunshot wounds were discovered at another crime scene.”

The suspect later drove to a police station in Half Moon Bay, where television crews were already waiting for a police press conference. Footage taken by them shows an apparently Asian man being pushed to the ground by armed police officers. According to Sheriff Corpus, the man has been identified as Chunli Zhao. He worked at one of the two crime scenes, nurseries in Half Moon Bay. The suspect is cooperating with the investigating officers.

Dismay at California’s governor

According to the police, the victims are colleagues of the arrested person. According to a local broadcaster, those killed all came from China. The attack was carried out in front of other people living on the farms, including several children, Corpus said. “It’s just unbelievable that children have to experience something like this.”

“One tragedy follows another,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote on Twitter. The White House said US President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident. He has been fighting for a tightening of gun laws for a long time without success.

Already 38 attacks this year

Gun violence and deadly attacks of this magnitude are sadly normal in the United States. Just over the weekend, a gunman opened fire at a dance hall during a Chinese New Year celebration in Southern California, killing 11 people.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 38 gun attacks in the United States in the first 21 days of the new year, each killing more than four people.
