Mourning for Lars Vogt (1970-2022): The German pianist and conductor died on Monday, September 5th, at the age of 51. This was announced by his agency, Askonas Holt, via Twitter. Accordingly, the musician died peacefully at home in the “afternoon, surrounded by his family” after fighting cancer.

Vogt was born in Düren on September 8, 1970 and later completed his studies at the University of Music and Theater in Hanover. At the age of 20, the musician won second place at the Leeds International Piano Competition.

An impressive career / Lars Vogt dies

In this country he made a name for himself through performances with many famous symphony orchestras. In his long career, Vogt also had various performances abroad, such as Helsinki, Rome, America and the Far East. In 2003 he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic.

In 2012 he was given a professorship for piano at the university in Hanover where he had once studied. In 2019 he was appointed chief conductor of the Orchester de Chambre de Paris. He has held the post since July 2020. Lars Vogt dies…

Vogt has received several awards, including the Echo Klassik in the chamber music category in 2004, the Silver Tuning Fork in 2009 and the Opus Klassik in 2021. The musician leaves behind his second wife, the Polish violinist Anna Reszniak, and three children.

SENSITIVE, ATTENTIVE, LOVELY

He will not live to see his 52nd birthday next Thursday: the pianist and conductor Lars Vogt has lost the fight against cancer. He died on September 5 surrounded by his family.

“What’s the use if I’m great at playing the piano but I’m dead?” Pianist Lars Vogt, who was born in Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1970, often responded with gallows humor last year when asked about the side effects of his chemotherapy.

The doctors had predicted that his finger sensitivity could suffer. Lars Vogt continued to play: Even in the hospital between the individual chemotherapy infusions on the hospital’s own wing. And didn’t lose heart.

SECOND CAREER AS CONDUCTOR

In early 2021, his doctors told him he had esophageal cancer. In March 2021 he made his illness public and took up the fight with her.

Last autumn Lars Vogt recorded a CD with Mozart’s piano concertos between two chemotherapy sessions with the Orchester de Chambre de Paris. It was only in 2019 that he took over this orchestra as chief conductor, adding another facet to his pianistic career as a conductor.

LARS VOGT – STATIONS IN NEW YORK, MUNICH AND BERLIN

But it all began with the piano competition in Leeds in 1990: just twenty years old, second prize opened all doors for Lars Vogt. He is invited by orchestras all over Europe. Lars Vogt dies…

Simon Rattle brings him to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and records Schumann and Grieg’s piano concerto with him in 1992, followed three years later by the first two Beethoven piano concertos.

In the same year he made his first guest appearance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alan Gilbert. In the 2003/2004 season he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel. And the Berlin Philharmonic make him “Pianist in Residence”.

MUSIC BETWEEN TURBINES AND IN SCHOOLS

In addition, chamber music is and remains Lars Vogt’s great passion. In the imposing power station of Heimbach in the Eifel, he established the chamber music festival “tensions” – soon one of the most renowned chamber music festivals in Germany.

Every year since 1998 he has invited fellow musicians there to perform chamber music between gigantic turbines. The “Rhapsody in School” network, which Vogt co-founded, operates just as unconventionally.

He and his comrades-in-arms go to schools to play music in front of school classes, to introduce students to classical music and to answer their questions.

From 2012, Lars Vogt will be taking care of young professionals at the Hanover University of Music and Performing Arts. There, after the death of his former teacher Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, he took over the vacant professorship.

LARS VOGT WILL BE MISSING / Lars Vogt dies

With Lars Vogt, the world not only loses a sensitive and extremely versatile musician, but also an extraordinarily approachable, open and warm person. Lars Vogt brought people together and inspired them in a way that only a few have. He will be missed.
