The 6 longest bridges in the world

Bridges lead over gorges, rivers, lakes or entire seas and it is impossible to imagine our world without them. The longest bridges in the world

They exist for pedestrians, cars and trains, and they are often true architectural masterpieces – especially when they connect particularly distant places. The longest bridges in the world…

The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China is a whopping 164.8 kilometers long and, as a railway bridge, connects the cities of Shanghai and Nanjing in the east of the country.

The bridge, which officially opened in June 2011, was built in a record time of just four years. Part of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, it spans a variety of obstacles, including several canals and lakes. The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge cost a whopping $8.5 billion to build and is designed to withstand not only typhoons and magnitude 8 earthquakes, but also direct fire from naval vessels weighing up to 330,000 tons. The longest span is 80 meters.

2. Changhua-Kaohsiung Viaduct, Taiwan

The second longest bridge in the world is the Changhua-Kaohsiung Viaduct in Taiwan, which is also used for bullet trains. The viaduct spans 157 kilometers and was built as a series of interconnected bridges to better withstand earthquakes. This is an important security issue because Taiwan lies at the intersection of two tectonic plates, the Philippine and Eurasian plates. Earthquakes are therefore not uncommon in the Asian country.

3. Cangde Grand Bridge, China

Third place goes to China again, namely to the Cangde Grand Bridge. It has a length of 116 kilometers and is part of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail line. This bridge is also designed to withstand shaking from earthquakes.

4. Tianjin Grand Bridge, China

And the fourth longest bridge in the world is also in China. It is the Tianjin Grand Bridge in the north of the People’s Republic. It was opened to train traffic in 2011 and is 113 kilometers long.

5. Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge, China

And, surprise: China again! The Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge takes fifth place. As the science portal “How stuff works” reports, the almost 80-kilometer-long structure was even the longest bridge in the world when it opened in 2008, but was then quickly “overtaken” by the other bridges mentioned above. As part of the Zhengzhou-Xi’an high-speed railway system, it plays a crucial role as it connects the economically important cities of Zhengzhou and Xi’an.

6. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, China

Sixth place also goes to China. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is a road link between the cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau. What makes it so special is that part of the route leads through an underwater tunnel and four artificial islands have been created. With a length of 55 kilometers, it is the longest sea bridge in the world.
