Officials in India fear that the number of dead may increase after some carriages were seriously damaged and rescue workers still were not able to reach some areas in the crash which occurred around 2am local time.

Some of the carriages looked like a heap of twisted metal where as the roof of one carriage flew off after the force of the impact.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated and the possibility of foul play has still not been ruled out said the Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee.

A similar train accident had occurred just two months ago when 145 people had died after a train derailed, while travelling in high speed. Maoist rebels were blamed for the incident.

Two carriages on the passenger train were particularly crammed as it was the cheapest class and usually are packed over the limit.

The survivors of the crash were the first to look for the injured and were joined by rescue workers soon after.
