Gaziantep, Turkey / NationalTurk – A total of 46 Gaziantepspor officials, including club president İbrahim Kızıl, were detained as part of an investigation started by the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) yesterday.
Gaziantep prosecutors sinformed the club officials have been taken into custody due to a financial investigation of the Turkish Super League club and the detainments are not about the ongoing match-fixing case, which has rocked the football agenda in Turkey.
‘ The financial investigation began in October 2011 and included the investigation of documents from Kızıl Holdings, companies of the club chairman and the Gaziantepspor club from the last five years,’ the statement from state prosecutors read. ‘ The case is not about sport issues such as match-fixing. ‘
Earlier this season, UEFA sanctioned Gaziantepspor with a ban excluding the team from the continental competitions, due to the unpaid wages of several foreign players the club from southeastern Turkey formerly signed.
