Ukraine: There is a risk of explosion in Chernobyl, Russian soldiers should withdraw

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verechuk stated that the Russian forces, which seized the facility due to the risk of explosion in Chernobyl, should withdraw immediately.

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Verechuk said that there is a risk of explosion of ammunition at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and that the Russian forces occupying the facility should immediately withdraw. Verechuk stated that the warning of the explosion came from the Ukrainian armed forces.

“We demand that the United Nations Security Council take immediate action to demilitarize Chernobyl, which is the forbidden zone, and initiate a special UN mission to the region to minimize the risk of a nuclear disaster again,” the Ukrainian official said. Verechuk also announced that Ukraine requested Russia to allow the opening of 97 humanitarian corridors in the villages and cities most affected by the attacks, during the negotiations held in Istanbul yesterday.

At the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion, the Russian army’s capture of the plant in Chernobyl caused concerns that a new leak might occur at the plant, where the nuclear disaster took place in 1986.
