{"id":1840,"date":"2009-12-03T07:16:25","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T13:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=1840"},"modified":"2009-12-03T07:17:19","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T13:17:19","slug":"e-mail-account-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/e-mail-account-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"PSNI warning over e-mail account scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Internet users have been warned of a scam targeting their e-mail accounts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/e-mail-account.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1841\" title=\"e-mail account scam\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/e-mail-account-280x210.jpg\" alt=\"e-mail account scam\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/e-mail-account-280x210.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/e-mail-account.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>It follows reports from the Clogher area of County Tyrone about e-mails purporting to be from a major internet services provider.<\/p>\n<p>Recipients are given a deadline to provide their user names and passwords or their e-mail account would be lost.<\/p>\n<p>Some then got a message from someone on their contacts list claiming to be stuck without money in England and asking for money to be transferred.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was a scam. We are still trying to establish how the fraudsters got e-mail addresses in the first place, but that was only their first step,&#8221; a police spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that the crooks then used information from those who responded to collate names and e-mail addresses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the scam was carried out about two or three weeks ago, but had only just come to the attention of the police.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not know how many people received the message, and so far we have not been contacted by anyone who sent money on,&#8221; the spokesman added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the initial report has come from the south Tyrone area, we believe that a number of people north and south of the border have been contacted by the fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are advising all internet users to be wary about messages they receive.
