In fact, it is so old that it may not have been painted by modern humans. There is a possibility that Neanderthals were the artists.

The researchers said in Cantabria, El Castillo they have found hand stencils that were formed by blowing paint against the hands pressed against the wall of a cave. The scientists found in Spain one of painting to date older than over 37 thousand years on ‘ The Panel of Hands. ‘ There is a red disc created by a very congenial technique that dates to older than 40,800 years. This now currently is Europe’s the oldest dated painting-art by at least 4 thousand years. It is probably also the oldest reliably dated cave art anywhere in the globe.

Cave painting art much more older than thought / The El Castillo Cave in Spain

The scientists says if anatomically modern humans have been responsible then it means they involved in the activity almost instantly on their arrival in Europe. However if Neanderthals have been the artisans, it adds another layer to the understanding of their capabilities, experiences and sophistication.

Paintings The El Castillo Cave in Spain had already been dated by previous researchers. But Alistair Pike – an archaeologist with the University of Bristol says those dates were unreliable, because dating cave art is very insidious business. Archaeologists may define when these crusts formed by looking at tiny amounts of radioactive uranium, which slowly decays into thorium. Once researchers have determined the date of the crust, they know that the painting lying underneath must be older. Alistair Pike and his professional group of researchers applied this technique to the Spanish caves, and they found that some of the artwork was much older than anyone has expected.

The scientists have reported they found cave art which is older than any before dated.
