Big Ben’s tower is to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, it has been announced.<\/h1>\n

The decision has been made to change the name from the Clock Tower after a campaign supported by the three main party leaders as well as more than half of MPs.<\/p>\n

It was originally proposed by Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood in an early day motion backed by 40 MPs, which asked the House of Commons Commission to consider the change ‘in recognition of Her Majesty’s 60 years of unbroken public service on behalf of her country’.<\/p>\n

House of Commons authorities have now agreed the name change, intended to honour the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, can go ahead.<\/p>\n

The commission said the proposal was a welcome one and it ‘will arrange for this decision to be implemented in an appropriate manner in due course’.<\/p>\n

This tribute is particularly fitting as the west tower at the Palace of Westminster, of which Big Ben is a part, had its name changed from King’s Tower to the Victoria Tower to pay tribute to the long reign of Queen Victoria – the only other monarch to have enjoyed a diamond jubilee.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
