{"id":23120,"date":"2012-08-03T11:10:38","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T08:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=23120"},"modified":"2012-08-03T11:10:38","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T08:10:38","slug":"hosni-mubarak-minister-retains-key-cabinet-post-23120","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/hosni-mubarak-minister-retains-key-cabinet-post-23120\/","title":{"rendered":"Hosni Mubarak Minister Retains Key Cabinet Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/morsi-tantawi.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-23133\" title=\"morsi tantawi\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/morsi-tantawi-610x343.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/morsi-tantawi-610x343.gif 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/morsi-tantawi-280x157.gif 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/morsi-tantawi.gif 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<h1>Egypt\u2019s military chief, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, has kept his job as defence minister in the country\u2019s new Islamist led government.<\/h1>\n<p>His appointment cements the military\u2019s continuing influence in Egypt where it retains control over legislation and the writing of a new constitution despite the transition to civilian rule.<\/p>\n<p>Tantawi held the same post for two decades under President Hosni Mubarak and led the controversial military council which took charge of Egypt after the February 2011 revolution.<\/p>\n<p>President Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader, has struggled to wrest power from the military since he was elected in June.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first freely elected President in the nation\u2019s history and also the first Islamist, raising fears among moderate, secular Egyptians of a sharp shift towards religious rule.<\/p>\n<p>He had pledged to deliver an \u201cinclusive government\u201d, but there are just two women among the 35 ministers, one of them a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the new cabinet, sworn in by President Morsi in a ceremony in Cairo, is made up largely of technocrats, with his own Muslim Brotherhood party taking a small number of key posts.<\/p>\n<p>The government was selected by Prime Minister Hisham Qandil \u2013 himself not a member of the Islamist movement &#8211; who said that \u201ccompetence\u201d was the most important factor in choosing his 35 ministers.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Qandil, a little known former water minister, is tasked with implementing the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s \u201cRenaissance Project\u201d to improve Egypt\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>He told Reuters that he would hold a meeting on Saturday to discuss the next steps in approaching the International Monetary Fund for a loan.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt is facing a budget and balance of payments crisis after the post revolution turmoil and political uncertainty spooked foreign investors.
