Ankara, Turkey \/ NationalTurk : Members of the PKK terrorist organisation kidnapped a deputy from the Turkish main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the southeastern province of Tunceli last Sunday, causing the party to redouble their calls for an extraordinary meeting of Turkish Parliament (TBMM), which is currently in summer recess.<\/p>\n

Ruling AKP deputy head H\u00fcseyin \u00c7elik dismissed the CHP’s calls during an interview on broadcaster Habert\u00fcrk, justifying his statement as ‘ calling an extraordinary meeting of Turkish Parliament would allow the PKK to set the political agenda in Turkey. ‘<\/p>\n

‘ Parliament can meet if necessary, ‘ \u00c7elik stated. ‘ However we cannot allow the terrorist organization to set the agenda just because PKK raided a place and killed a few Mehmets [Turkish soldiers].’<\/p>\n

Mehmet\u00e7ik (literally Little Mehmet) is a general term used fondly to refer soldiers of the Ottoman Army and Turkish Army. Mehmet\u00e7ik is the Turkish equivalent of ‘ Tommy Atkins ‘ for the British Army, ‘ Doughboy’ or ‘ G.I. Joe ‘ of the US Army. Any Turkish soldier, who dies battling the enemy becomes a martyr, a religous reference.<\/p>\n

A lawmaker from Turkish Parliament’s kidnapping cannot change the AKP’s stance on the issue, H\u00fcseyin \u00c7elik added.<\/p>\n

An extensive 19-day military operation against PKK terrorist presence in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari had been concluded on Aug. 11. The main opposition CHP had asked the AKP government to inform the public about the scale of the military operations and the situation in Turkey’s southeast region, calling for an extraordinary meeting of Turkish Parliament. The Erdogan-led government had rejected the call, stating that now was ‘ a time to act and not to discuss.’<\/p>\n
