French forces trying to suppress the rebellion in Mali, the other Islamist terrorist groups was an act of terrorism in Algeria.\u00a0Al-Qaeda and affiliated other islamist terror \u00a0groups in African countries, acts of terrorism, whether it is trying to create a second Afghanistan in Africa continent.<\/p>\n

Oil major BP said on Wednesday it had experienced a “security incident” at a gas field in Algeria.<\/p>\n

The announcement followed reports that Islamist militants had seized foreigners from the facility the same day.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThere has been a security incident this morning at the In Amenas gas field in the eastern central region of Algeria,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>BP said in a statement, providing no further details. The company said, however, that it was \u201csetting up a helpline for relatives,\u201d Reuters reported. An Algerian security official said at least eight foreigners, including English, Norwegian and Japanese nationals, were kidnapped.<\/p>\n

At least one person has been killed in the attack on an oil facility at the town of In Amenas, local media say.<\/p>\n

It is unclear what nationalities were involved.<\/p>\n

The oil giant BP says there has been an incident at the installation it runs in partnership with Norwegians and Algerians.<\/p>\n

The abduction comes as French forces are preparing to attack Islamist militants in Algeria’s southern neighbour, Mali. It is unclear if Wednesday’s attack is linked.<\/p>\n

The UK Foreign Office said it “was seeking clarification from oil companies working in the area as to whether they have personnel involved”.<\/p>\n

Early reports said five Frenchmen and a Japanese national had been seized, but a Western diplomat told the French news agency AFP those abducted included British and Norwegian staff.<\/p>\n

The In Amenas gas field is a joint operation by BP, the Algerian state oil company, Sonatrach, and the Norwegian firm, Statoil. A Japanese engineering company is a contractor on the project.<\/p>\n

The Japanese foreign ministry said it was gathering information on the incident.<\/p>\n

The Algerian army is reported to have launched an operation to free the hostages.<\/p>\n

Islamist militants in the region have in recent years seized a number of foreigners, mainly in Mali. Eight French nationals are currently being held across the region.<\/p>\n\n
