Russia’s biggest mafia bosses\u00a0Aslan Usoyan\u00a0”\u00a0Grandpa Hassan ”\u00a0has been shot dead\u00a0by sniper in center of Moscow’s Arbat district.<\/h1>\n

One of Russia\u2019s most notorious criminal masterminds, Mafia godfather Aslan Usoyan, also known as \u2018Grandpa Hassan,\u2019 was shot dead by a sniper rifle in central Moscow on Wednesday, police said.<\/p>\n

He was exiting the Karetny Dvor restaurant, about 1.5 kilometres from the Kremlin, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

A sniper fired six shots at Usoyan from the window of a nearby house as the 75-year-old was walking out of a restaurant in Moscow\u2019s Arbat district.<\/p>\n

His bodyguards failed to cover him in time, and the crime boss died from his injuries on the way to hospital.<\/p>\n

A woman walking out of the restaurant at the same time as Usoyan was taken to the hospital with serious chest and hip injuries. She is currently in intensive care undergoing surgery, RIA Novosti quoted a public healthcare official as saying. The woman turned out to be \u201cjust a passerby<\/em>,\u201d the police reported.<\/p>\n

\u2018Grandpa Hassan\u2019 had managed to survive at least two previous assassination attempts: A would-be killer missed him in Sochi in 1998, and another one seriously injured Usoyan and his bodyguard in a 2010 Moscow shooting.<\/p>\n

The \u2018godfather\u2019 had lately become a target in a war between criminal clans, the police said, connecting the assassination attempts to an ongoing conflict among \u2018thieves in law.\u2019<\/p>\n

The 2010 and 2013 sniper shootings \u201care connected and have apparently been prepared by the same people<\/em>,\u201d a police source told Interfax.<\/p>\n

Usoyan, an ethnic Kurdish Yezidi mobster, started his criminal career in Georgia, where he earned his first jail term for fighting police at the age of 19.<\/p>\n

While in jail on speculation charges from 1966 to 1968, he acquired the status of \u2018thief in law\u2019 \u2013 marking his standing among the elite of the Soviet and post-Soviet criminal underworld.<\/p>\n

In recent years, \u2018Grandpa Hassan\u2019 was widely suspected of controlling various organized criminal groups that dealt in illegal gambling, arms and drug trafficking, and the theft of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n
