Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed damning comments by US President Barack Obama on Israel\u2019s settlement policy.<\/h1>\n

Responding to President Obama\u2019s warning that Israel was\u00a0\u201cgoing down the path to near-total isolation,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed Israel\u2019s right to self-determination.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone understands only Israelis will determine who faithfully represents Israel\u2019s vital interests,<\/em>\u201d Netanyahu said during a visit to the Israel Defense Forces\u2019 Gaza division. He emphasized that the US sought for Israel to\u00a0\u201crestrain our pressure on Iran, withdraw to the 1967 lines, divide Jerusalem and cease construction in Jerusalem.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Shrugging off US influence, Netanyahu said that Israel had\u00a0\u201cfended off those pressures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Israeli Prime Minister\u2019s comments came after American political commentator Jeffrey Goldberg published a blog post on Bloomberg on Obama\u2019s response to Israel\u2019s announcement it will build thousands of homes in the West Bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cObama said privately and repeatedly that Israel doesn\u2019t know what its own best interests are,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Goldberg wrote, quoting Obama.\u00a0\u201cWith each new settlement announcement, Netanyahu is moving his country down a path toward near-total isolation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Following the UN\u2019s recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state last year, Netanyahu announced plans to build 4,000 housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The plans provoked international condemnation by human rights groups and world governments.<\/p>\n

The US voted against Palestine\u2019s bid for de facto statehood in the UN General Assembly, but Goldberg warned in his blog that in the future, Israel may not be able to rely on US support and vetoes in the UN.<\/p>\n

Members of Netanyahu\u2019s Likud party were enraged by the US president\u2019s comments, condemning them as \u201cgross interference\u201d and a US attempt to meddle in the upcoming Israeli elections.<\/p>\n

The Obama administration\u2019s relationship with Netanyahu has become increasingly frosty over the past year.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu and Obama came close to diplomatic blows on a number of occasions over how to deal with Iran\u2019s nuclear program. Last year, the Israeli prime minister repeatedly called for US aid for a military strike on Tehran\u2019s nuclear facilities. Obama has sought to defuse Netanyahu\u2019s aggression towards Israel\u2019s rival, and has preferred to ratchet up pressure on Tehran through financial sanctions.<\/p>\n

The two leaders\u2019 increasingly stormy relationship could herald a rift in a traditional alliance now that polls project that Netanyahu will win the upcoming Israeli elections.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
