{"id":3411,"date":"2010-01-21T15:44:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T13:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=3411"},"modified":"2010-01-22T11:23:11","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T09:23:11","slug":"tekel-workers-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/tekel-workers-hunger-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Tekel workers hospitalized in hunger strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/tekel-workers-hospitalized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3412\" title=\"Four Tekel workers hospitalized in hunger strike\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/tekel-workers-hospitalized-280x185.jpg\" alt=\"Four Tekel workers hospitalized in hunger strike\" width=\"280\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/tekel-workers-hospitalized-280x185.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/tekel-workers-hospitalized-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/tekel-workers-hospitalized.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a>On their 38th day of demonstrations in Ankara, four Tekel workers were taken to a hospital as a result of a hunger strike that began Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s former state-owned alcohol and tobacco monopoly, or Tekel, workers, including many women, started a hunger strike Tuesday in front of the Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions, or T\u00fcrk-\u0130\u015f, headquarters in Ankara, saying that they would stage a \u201cdeath fast\u201d if their demands were not met.<\/p>\n<p>Ambulances are present at the site as well as doctors, who regularly check the workers\u2019 blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Tekel workers have been protesting in Ankara for over a month to oppose the privatization of the former monopoly and the government\u2019s refusal to meet their demands regarding a related change in their positions.<\/p>\n<p>The Tekel privatization obliges workers to either quit their jobs or accept work in another state institution with lower wages and fewer benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The former Tekel workers will be employed in temporary positions at other public institutions under Article 4\/C of Law No. 657 in Turkey, which they say will cause a significant reduction in wages, by almost half, and the loss of some of their rights. Under Article 4\/C of the law, employees are allowed to work a maximum of 10 months.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist! Check your syntax!
