Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Diyarbak\u0131r\u2019s Nowruz Park in the early hours of the morning to celebrate Nowruz in the heightened anticipation of a historic message from the jailed leader of the outlawed terrorist group Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) over the continuing peace process.<\/p>\n

The majority of the Turkish people do not accept the peace project\u00a0and all of them feel as if they had been deceived.Nowruz by the PKK and the Kurds, is seen as a challenge to the Republic of Turkey.<\/p>\n

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputies Pervin Buldan and S\u0131rr\u0131 S\u00fcreyya \u00d6nder are expected to read a message penned by PKK leader Abdullah \u00d6calan, which is widely expected to include a cease-fire call to PKK militants. The message is set to be read in both Kurdish and Turkish.<\/p>\n

The park has been decked out with posters of \u00d6calan; flags of the PKK; flags of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), the urban wing of the PKK; and the flag of the first ever independent Kurdish state \u2013 the Republic of Mahabad \u2013 which is also used by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq.<\/p>\n

Over 500 reporters, including 100 foreign correspondents, are currently present at the site. Photos of PKK leaders Ethem Karabulut and \u015eirin Cebe, both killed in recent operations, have been hung onto the walls of main platform for the event, as well as photos of inmates at the infamous Diyarbak\u0131r Military Prison No. 5 who set themselves on fire in protest at systematic prison torture during the early 1980s.<\/p>\n

Organizers also hung photos of Sakine Cans\u0131z, Fidan Do\u011fan and Leyla S\u00f6ylemez, three female Kurdish activists who were murdered in Paris on Jan. 9, in the square. Also present are banners with the slogans in Kurdish \u201cWe are ready both for a resolution and resistance\u201d and \u201cWe are ready to fight and to negotiate,\u201d as well as the multilingual \u201cFor a democratic solution; freedom for Mr. \u00d6calan, official status for the Kurds.<\/p>\n

People wearing dresses in the traditional Kurdish colors of yellow, red and green poured onto streets beginning from the early hours in the morning to celebrate Nowruz. The main celebration area was totally full around 9 a.m. in the morning. Many people from neighboring provinces flocked to Diyarbak\u0131r for the celebrations. Unlike previous years, Nowruz is being celebrated only in Diyarbak\u0131r today.
