{"id":3601,"date":"2010-01-29T10:55:18","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T08:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=3601"},"modified":"2020-08-18T14:53:28","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T13:53:28","slug":"north-korea-fires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/north-korea-fires\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea fires artillery again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>North Korea pressed ahead with a live-fire artillery drill in a tense border zone on Thursday despite US and South Korean criticism, and separately announced it had detained an American citizen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The communist state fired shells into the sea near its disputed maritime border with South Korea for a second day, Seoul\u2019s military said.<\/p>\n<p>Pyongyang\u2019s official news agency said an American was under investigation after being detained on Monday for illegally crossing the border from China &#8212; the second time in a month it has reported such a case.<\/p>\n<p>The shells from shore batteries landed near a South Korean island but Seoul said none fell in South Korean waters.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday the North had lobbed more than 80 shells near the flashpoint frontier and South Korean Marines fired 100 warning shots in response.<\/p>\n<p>The North describes the drill, which started a day after it declared \u201cno sail\u201d zones in the area, as a routine military exercise.<\/p>\n<p>But the western sea border, which it refuses to recognise, was the scene of deadly naval battles in 1999 and 2002.
