{"id":36109,"date":"2013-03-29T14:53:44","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T12:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=36109"},"modified":"2013-03-29T14:53:44","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T12:53:44","slug":"turkey-reopen-greek-minorty-school-in-imbros-island-after-50-years-turkey-news-36109","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/turkey-reopen-greek-minorty-school-in-imbros-island-after-50-years-turkey-news-36109\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey reopen Greek minorty school in Imbros island after 50 years \/ Turkey News"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36116\" title=\"Imbros-Greek-Minority-School\" alt=\"Imbros-Greek-Minority-School\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School-280x186.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Imbros-Greek-Minority-School-540x360.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<h1>The Turkish Education Ministry has responded positively to a demand to reopen a Greek\u00a0minority school on the Aegean island of Gokceada (Imbros).<\/h1>\n<p>Announcing his ministry\u2019s decision to grant permission for the reopening of the Private Gokceada( Imbros ) Greek\u00a0Primary School, Education Minister Nabi Avc\u0131 told Anatolia news agency on March 28 that the decision was valid as of the date of the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Laki Vingas, who is in charge of minority foundations in Turkey\u2019s Foundations Directorate General, told<\/p>\n<p>The school was among many others that were closed some 50 years ago, Laki Vingas noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor half a century we have been working on creating a future starting from point zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laki Vingas said he was thankful for the government and the bureaucrats who lent support to the reopening of the school, which will be operational by the next school year starting in September.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on a question about whether this was a clue that Heybeliada Halki Seminary would also be reopened, Vingas said the two issues were different but related. \u201cFirst of all, it makes us very happy to see that the government has a will to solve the problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The school, which was opened in 1951, had been shut down in 1964 following a decree issued by Turkey\u2019s second president and prime minister at the time, \u0130smet \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc, on the pretext of the growing tensions in Cyprus that led to an exodus of Anatolian Greeks. The school in Gokceada was shut down shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>Only Turkish citizens are allowed to receive education in minority schools, in accordance with the Lausanne Treaty of 1923. According to Anatolia news agency, since 2011, three Greek\u00a0minority primary schools and one Greek\u00a0minority high school were closed down by the Education Ministry upon demands by the founders of the schools.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry is heeding applications for either the opening or closing of minority schools, Anatolia news agency added.<\/p>\n<p>Gokceada (Imbros in Greek) is an island in the Aegean Sea and the largest island of Turkey.
