Pakistan Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a plea to arrest country\u2019s former military ruler Parvez Musharraf in treason case.<\/h1>\n

Islamabad, April 9\/Nationalturk – In a major relief to country\u2019s former military ruler, Pakistan Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a plea to arrest General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf in a treason case.<\/p>\n

The division bench of Apex Court comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard the case against the former Pakistan military ruler seeking his trial under Article 6 of the Constitution for imposing the state of emergency in 2007.<\/p>\n

The court rejected the request seeking Musharraf\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n

Musharraf did not personally appear in court today and was represented by Advocate Ahmed Raza Kasuri, who was given power of attorney as Musharraf\u2019s lawyer to represent him in court.<\/p>\n

The apex court had yesterday directed Musharraf or his lawyer to appear in court to respond to the allegations. \u00a0It had also directed government to bar Musharraf from leaving the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sought from the court six weeks\u2019 time from Musharraf to submit his response. We told the court that Musharraf would reply to every point raised against him adding that certain hidden names would be revealed in the response,\u201d Musharraf\u2019s counsel Raza Kasuri told reporters after the hearing.<\/p>\n

Musharraf\u2019s legal team granted six days to submit response<\/h2>\n

Kasuri said the court granted them six days\u2019 time to submit his response, adjourning the hearing till April 15.<\/p>\n

Musharraf, who returned to Pakistan on March 24 to contest the May 11 general election after spending more than four years in self-imposed exile,\u00a0 faces scores of legal cases, including the 2006 killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto and termination of country\u2019s top judges.<\/p>\n

Five identical petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking prosecution of Musharraf under the High Treason Act 1973 for\u00a0 suspending the Constitution and imposing emergency rule in 2007 \u2013 a move that had finally led to his downfall.<\/p>\n

On October 12, 1999, then army chief Gen Parvez Musharraf had toppled the elected government of Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup and imposed military rule. Later in 2007, he had declared emergency rule and sacked dozens of superior court judges, putting many of them, including Justice Chaudhry, under house arrest.<\/p>\n
