Worst hit are short haul flights from Germany to the rest of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Around 100 flights &#8211; including departures and arrivals &#8211; have been cancelled at airports in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>Affected airports include Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Hannover, D\u00fcsseldorf and Cologne, plus the Lufthansa site in Norderstedt, northern Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Verdi is calling for a 5.2 percent pay increase for 33,000 Lufthansa ground staff, plus employees of the subsidiaries Lufthansa-Systems, Lufthansa Service Group (LSG), Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo, as well as those cabin crew members who are Verdi members.<\/p>\n<p>The union announced Monday&#8217;s strike last week after management failed to come up with up an acceptable pay offer following three rounds of talks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36903\" alt=\"Lufthansa-Strikes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-280x179.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-560x360.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ground staff at Stuttgart airport stopped work around 4am on Monday morning, with Lufthansa employees walking out across Germany by 5am. Staff at the airline&#8217;s subsidiary Lufthansa Technik also abandoned their posts overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Both Lufthansa and services union Verdi are not expecting a rush of passengers to hit the terminals as many had heard the news and would stay away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe terminal is almost empty, probably because most passengers are prepared,\u201d said Gerold Schaub from Verdi Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Deutsche Bahn will put on extra staff to deal with a possible onslaught of train passengers after Lufthansa offered rail vouchers to those who had booked flights which had been cancelled because of the strike.<\/p>\n<p>The strike is the second to hit German Lufthansa services in the past month, with some 700 out of a total 1,800 daily flights cancelled during a half day walkout at the end of March.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36904\" alt=\"Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights-280x207.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Lufthansa-Strikes-hit-German-Flights-486x360.jpg 486w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa&#8217;s chief personnel officer, Stefan Lauer, estimated that around 150,000 passengers would be affected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This time it is a strike &#8230; with a massive impact, completely excessive, that has only one aim &#8211; to position itself as a union at Lufthansa against many other unions and groups,&#8221; he told German television channel ARD.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s largest airline said those hit by the cancellations can re-book their flights at no extra charge.<\/p>\n<p>The ver.di trade union announced the &#8220;warning strike&#8221; &#8211; which is often used by German unions to increase pressure in wage talks &#8211; on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after the airline rejected the union&#8217;s demand for job guarantees and wage increases of 5.2% over the next year.<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa is attempting to cut costs to cope with high fuel prices and increasing competition from budget airlines and Gulf operators like Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways.<\/p>\n<p>The next round of wage negotiations is scheduled for April 29th.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist!
