Lufthansa staff have gone on strike over a pay dispute, forcing the company to cancel the majority of its scheduled flights.<\/h1>\n

Just 32 of the airline’s 1,720 scheduled flights across Germany are expected to take off on Monday as Lufthansa staff walk out over a wage dispute. Worst hit are short haul flights from Germany to the rest of Europe.<\/p>\n

Around 100 flights – including departures and arrivals – have been cancelled at airports in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dublin.<\/p>\n

Affected airports include Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Hannover, D\u00fcsseldorf and Cologne, plus the Lufthansa site in Norderstedt, northern Germany.<\/p>\n

Verdi is calling for a 5.2 percent pay increase for 33,000 Lufthansa ground staff, plus employees of the subsidiaries Lufthansa-Systems, Lufthansa Service Group (LSG), Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo, as well as those cabin crew members who are Verdi members.<\/p>\n

The union announced Monday’s strike last week after management failed to come up with up an acceptable pay offer following three rounds of talks.<\/p>\n

Ground staff at Stuttgart airport stopped work around 4am on Monday morning, with Lufthansa employees walking out across Germany by 5am. Staff at the airline’s subsidiary Lufthansa Technik also abandoned their posts overnight.<\/p>\n

Both Lufthansa and services union Verdi are not expecting a rush of passengers to hit the terminals as many had heard the news and would stay away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe terminal is almost empty, probably because most passengers are prepared,\u201d said Gerold Schaub from Verdi Frankfurt.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Deutsche Bahn will put on extra staff to deal with a possible onslaught of train passengers after Lufthansa offered rail vouchers to those who had booked flights which had been cancelled because of the strike.<\/p>\n

The strike is the second to hit German Lufthansa services in the past month, with some 700 out of a total 1,800 daily flights cancelled during a half day walkout at the end of March.<\/p>\n

Lufthansa’s chief personnel officer, Stefan Lauer, estimated that around 150,000 passengers would be affected.<\/p>\n

“This time it is a strike … with a massive impact, completely excessive, that has only one aim – to position itself as a union at Lufthansa against many other unions and groups,” he told German television channel ARD.<\/p>\n

Germany’s largest airline said those hit by the cancellations can re-book their flights at no extra charge.<\/p>\n

The ver.di trade union announced the “warning strike” – which is often used by German unions to increase pressure in wage talks – on Friday.<\/p>\n

It comes after the airline rejected the union’s demand for job guarantees and wage increases of 5.2% over the next year.<\/p>\n

Lufthansa is attempting to cut costs to cope with high fuel prices and increasing competition from budget airlines and Gulf operators like Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways.<\/p>\n
