Home Secretary Theresa May has revealed she has signed a new treaty with Jordan to help secure the deportation of Abu Qatada.<\/h1>\n

Mrs Theresa May told MPs she had secured “fair trial guarantees” that she believes give the Government “every chance” of kicking out the radical cleric.<\/p>\n

But the Home Secretary, in a Commons statement, did warn that the legal process could last “many months” as Qatada fights to stay in Britain.<\/p>\n

She insisted the terror suspect should remain behind bars while the legal battle – which has already lasted around a decade – continues.<\/p>\n

And she confirmed that a temporary withdrawal from the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) was one option being considered.<\/p>\n

“We should have all options, including leaving, on the table. The Prime Minister is looking at all the options. That is the only sensible thing to do,” she said.<\/p>\n

The Government is to appeal directly to the Supreme Court to try and overturn the existing ruling that prevents Qatada being sent back to Jordan to face trial.<\/p>\n

But it appears clear Mrs May is more focused on restarting deportation proceedings based on the fresh assurances about his treatment if he is sent home.<\/p>\n

She told the House she believed it would make deportation possible once it was ratified but made clear the cleric could still launch lengthy appeals.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
