Stating that Syria is burning, Pakistan has asked United Nations to stop arms supplies to all warring factions in Syria.<\/h1>\n

Islamabad, July 23\/Nationalturk – Concerned over continued bloodshed in Syria, Pakistan has asked United Nations to stop arms supplies to all warring factions in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cSyria is burning,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s UN envoy Masood Khan told the 15-nation Council in United Nations in New York.<\/p>\n

He said the situation in the region is dangerous. \u201cBloodshed is continuing and death toll is rising with each passing day. Guns are not going to win the war\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe warring factions want to demonstrate military superiority before moving to the negotiating\u00a0 table,\u201d he said while referring to dates for Geneva Conference, which was first supposed to be held in June, then in July and now it is being said that talks will be held in September.<\/p>\n

\u2018More weapons will lead to more bloodshed\u2019<\/h2>\n

Noting that UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi had called for stopping the supply of arms, he said Pakistan urged United Nations and big powers to stop flow of weapons to all the warring factions in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore arms will only lead to more bloodshed, not peace. We believe that in this war there will be no victors because Syrian is killing Syrian. The entire Syrian nation is suffering. A meltdown in Syria will fracture the entire region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The conflict in Syria is already having an enormous impact on its neighbouring countries and is threatening to snowball further. At least 1.8 million Syrians are now refugees in neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s UN envoy urged UN Security council and international community to bring the Syrian government and opposition representatives to Geneva for talks so that a political solution is evolved. \u201cAll countries with interest and influence, including from the region, should\u00a0 participate in the talks for a viable and enduring peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe welcome the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon\u2019s call for a ceasefire during Ramadan.\u00a0 Although It was not heeded but it still has a symbolic value,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Syrian opposition groups has more than 0.1 million people have been killed in Syria since start of rebellion against Bashar al Assad\u2019s government two and a half years back. The government forces and rebels accuse each other of using chemical weapons during the civil war. Many revered religious places have been damaged in the firing and shelling from the two sides.<\/p>\n
