Our party also made efforts to unanimously nominate an opposition leader as well. The move of Supreme Court to prepone presidential election from August 6 to July 30 and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was seen a move towards one-unit (referring to ruling PML-N),” PPP senior leader and candidate for the presidential election Senator Raza Rabbani told media persons.

He said the party was left with no alternative but to boycott the presidential election.

“The Supreme Court did not issue us any notices, nor did they hear us or provide us an opportunity to present our point of view. The court made a unilateral decision. We see it is part of moves to impose the centre’s rule again,” he said.

Supreme Court preponed vote by a week.

Pakistan’s Election Commission had originally set the election date as August 6. However, country’s Supreme Court this week agreed to change the date to July 30 in response to concern by the ruling PML-N that lawmakers would be on the traditional pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia during the end of Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Rabbani said the Supreme Court decision made it difficult for him and other opposition candidates to campaign in four provincial capitals and the federal capital Islamabad in just two days.

He said his party’s decision to boycott the presidential election is part of their struggle against the military and civilian dictatorship.

24 candidates file papers, PML-N’s candidate likely to win

Twenty-four candidates have filed the nomination papers. The election of Mamnoon Hussain, candidate of ruling PML-N is considered a foregone conclusion.

Observers said announcement by PPP will have a little impact on the outcome of the presidential election in the country. “The candidate nominated by the current ruling party PML-N is expected to win by big margin”.

Pakistan’s largely ceremonial president is not elected by popular vote, but by lawmakers in the Senate, National Assembly and the assemblies of the four provinces. The term of the current president Asif Ali Zardari expires in early September.

Write your comments and thoughts below

Faiz Ahmad / NationalTurk Pakistan News

In a decision, which is unlikely to have much impact, Pakistan’s former ruling party Pakistan’s People’s Party (PPP) Friday announced to boycott next week’s presidential election in the country.

[30,80,63,1,118,85,101,14
56131,13980,56132,56135,56140,56129,56139,47255,56141,6350,45881,636,48203,56130,50914,56142,48199,56136,56134,56133,11903,3469,11228,56137,4586,56138
post-40840","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia","category-breaking-news","category-daily","category-general","category-hot","category-media-news","category-politics","category-world","tag-announced","tag-asif-ali-zardari","tag-boycott","tag-by-a-week","tag-civilian-dictatorship","tag-former-ruling-party","tag-islamic-holy-month","tag-lawmakers","tag-mamnoon-hussain","tag-national-assembly","tag-opposition-leader","tag-pakistan","tag-pakistans-election-commission","tag-pakistans-peoples-party","tag-pml-n","tag-pml-n-candidate","tag-ppp","tag-ppp-senior-leader","tag-prepone-vote","tag-presidential-election","tag-ramadan","tag-saudi-arabia","tag-senate","tag-senator-raza-rabbani","tag-supreme-court","tag-traditional-pilgrimage
["GET
