Compulsion in respect of military training, it is felt, would go against the democratic ethos.”

‘Military training to all youth may lead to militarisation’

Antony said military training to all the youth of country may also lead to militarization of an entire nation. “With our socio-political and economic conditions, it is highly undesirable, lest some of the unemployed youth trained in military skills join the ranks of the undesirable elements”.

He said armed forces in India have a large number of volunteers to draw upon and there is no problem in getting adequate numbers of volunteer recruits. “All the youth of the country, therefore, do not compulsorily need to be given military training”.

‘It would be big drain on resources’

“Training all the youth in the country would require establishment of a very large number of training centers, with the necessary wherewithal, all over the country and would involve huge expenditure in their maintenance and upkeep,” Antony said.

Indian defence minister said likely benefits of imparting military training to all the youth will not be commensurate with the expenditure involved in such an effort. “This would translate into an unmanageable figure and will also be a big drain on limited resources of a developing country”.

Many countries in the world including Israel have made it obligatory for their citizens to undergo military training.

Write your comments and thoughts below

Faiz Ahmad / NationalTurk India News

Rejecting compulsory military training to its citizens, Indian government has said it is not in favour of compulsory military training to youth in the country.

[30,80,63,1,118,85,101,14
39918,40751,56850,56856,56851,56855,2546,56852,39917,8274,267,56858,56857,56854,56859,56853,56860
post-41400","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia","category-breaking-news","category-daily","category-general","category-hot","category-media-news","category-politics","category-world","tag-a-k-antony","tag-armed-forces","tag-compulsory-military-training","tag-democratic-ethos","tag-democratic-republic","tag-free-to-choose-professions","tag-india","tag-indian-constitution","tag-indian-defence-minister","tag-indian-government","tag-israel","tag-militarization","tag-military-training","tag-rajya-sabya","tag-undesirable-elements","tag-upper-house-of-parliament","tag-volunteers
["GET
