{"id":43850,"date":"2013-10-22T12:55:46","date_gmt":"2013-10-22T09:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=43850"},"modified":"2013-10-22T12:55:46","modified_gmt":"2013-10-22T09:55:46","slug":"indian-supreme-court-orders-periodic-checks-of-soft-drinks-43850","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/indian-supreme-court-orders-periodic-checks-of-soft-drinks-43850\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Supreme Court orders periodic checks of soft drinks"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_43851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43851\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43851\" alt=\"Soft drinks to be periodically checked in India.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Soft-Drinks-India-Nationalturk-22.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Soft-Drinks-India-Nationalturk-22.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Soft-Drinks-India-Nationalturk-22-220x220.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soft drinks to be periodically checked in India.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Indian Supreme Court Tuesday ordered Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to monitor and conduct periodic checks of all carbonated soft drinks in the country.<\/h1>\n<p>New Delhi, Oct 22\/Nationalturk- In order to keep check on quality of soft drink products, Indian Supreme Court Tuesday directed Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to monitor and conduct periodic checks of all carbonated soft drinks in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The division bench comprising Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice A K Sikri while disposing of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) said FSSAI must conduct periodic checks of the carbonated drinks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue relates to fundamental right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of Indian Constitution,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<h2>Panel should regulate soft drinks &#8211; PIL<\/h2>\n<p>The PIL filed by Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) in 2004 had sought constitution of an independent committee to regulate soft drinks to protect citizens from their &#8220;harmful effects&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The petition had also sought directions to cola firms to disclose the contents\/ingredients on the label of their bottles and to regulate &#8220;misleading&#8221; advertisements targeting children.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, on December 13, 2012 the apex court had reserved its order on a PIL, which had alleged that ingredients of carbonated drinks have serious harmful effects on human health and no action was taken to test and assess the risk posed by such beverages.<\/p>\n<p>However, soft drink giant Pepsi had opposed the PIL through its counsel, saying the Food Safety and Standards Act aimed at regulating the standards of beverages was &#8220;sufficient&#8221; and all the regulations were in place.<\/p>\n<p><em>Write your comments and thoughts below<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Faiz Ahmad \/ NationalTurk India News<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- Error, Advert is not available at this time due to schedule\/geolocation restrictions!
